126: The Worst Things People Say to Stepmoms (And Why They Hurt So Much)
“You knew what you signed up for.”
If you’re a stepmom, there’s a good chance you’ve heard that one before.
Maybe it’s, “At least you get every other week off.” Maybe it’s, “They’re not your kids, so why do you care so much?” Or maybe someone has questioned your role in the family altogether.
Unfortunately, comments like these are some of the most common things people say to stepmoms. And while they may seem harmless to the person saying them, they often hit right at the heart of the struggles many stepmoms already carry every day.
The truth is that stepfamily life is complicated. Most stepmoms are balancing relationship dynamics, parenting responsibilities, emotional labor, and blended family challenges that people outside of stepfamily life simply don’t understand. That’s why certain comments can feel so dismissive, frustrating, or even painful.
In this episode, I break down some of the worst things people say to stepmoms, why these comments hurt so much, and what you can do when someone completely misunderstands your experience. We’ll talk about stepmom struggles, role ambiguity, internet criticism, and how to develop the confidence to stop letting other people’s opinions define your place in the family.
In This Episode, You’ll Hear:
- Why comments like “You knew what you signed up for” feel so invalidating
- The hidden emotional load many stepmoms carry
- Common misconceptions about stepfamily life
- How to respond when someone misunderstands your role
- Building confidence and clarity in your place within a blended family
Laugh and cry with me. I promise- you will feel so much better and less alone.
